Just How Important Are Web Site SEO Services - AKA Search Engine Optimisation?

Try building a site without search engine optimization (also called web site SEO services), and see what happens.

What will happen without effective SEO services will be - nothing.

Absolutely nothing. Zip. Nada. Zilch.

Remember Kevin Costner in the film 'Field of Dreams' saying, "Build it, and they will come"?

Well, in the web site world, they won't.

SEO - Making Friends With the Search Engines

Your web site needs to be known to the major internet search engines, such as Google, Yahoo and MSN, so that potential customers searching the internet via these search engines can find you.

You may have seen adverts for companies that claim to submit your site to 2000 or more search engines for $99. Considering there are currently only 5 real search engines, the other 1995 are a complete waste of time. Save your money for something much more effective and useful - SEO services.

Free Search Results vs Paid Search Results

There are two types of web search your potential customers may use:

  1. Organic search (free results); the listings in the search engines that are listed by their rankings

  2. Paid search or pay per click advertising; the links that companies pay for to appear whenever potential customers search using a particular phrase or key words

Pay Per Click Advertising

If you want to pay for every visitor to your site, in other words, pay-per-click advertising or PPC, that's fine. Just make sure you make more profit than you spend on the clicks!

The top services are provided by Google AdWords and Yahoo Search Marketing - formerly known as Overture.

However, wouldn't you prefer to be to the top of the list in Google without paying for it? There's only one sure-fire way to do this for free: Search Engine Optimisation, or Web Site SEO Services.

How Search Engine Optimization, Or SEO, Works

Google's web searchers are its customers, so they want to give its customers the best service possible.

Google's search results will only offer sites with loads of keyword-rich, well written text content, on the search terms or subject the searcher entered. Google employs robots (scarily clever ones too) that trawl through your web site and every other site on the internet, looking at certain features.

  • How your web site has changed and what extra content has been added since it last looked
If you don't add extra pages or new content, Google assumes your site is out of date and won't even list it anymore.

  • How many links go to pages that have content about the link subject
If your web site menu lists the page "Our products" as the link text, the search engine robot expects the page to be all about the words "Our products". It would be far better to provide the robot with link text about what is actually on the page instead; like purple widgets or whatever.

  • How many web sites covering your same subject link to your site
Such links are considered by the search engines to be 'recommendations' from your peers, so what better could there be? However, there is a down side; if your web site offers a link back, or reciprocal link, the search engine thinks you're set this up to cheat and may mark you down

  • How many links come in from important sites
Search engines consider important sites to be those of universities, trade associations, governments, famous sites, television and media, etc.

Is Google Page Rank Important?

Google Page Rank , in our humble opinion here at Planet Web Marketing, is for ego trips only (the visible one, not Google's secret one). If you download the Google Toolbar, a little green bar gives the rank of any page you are surfing. However, this ranking is only updated every three months for public view, but changes daily for Google's own private ratings system.

Google Page Rank is not a complete waste of time, however; if your own web site has got links from PR7 or PR6 sites - Page Rank, or PR, is from 0 to 10, some of their high rank 'filters down' to your web site.

How Do I Get Good Rankings For My Web Site?

The secrets to good web site rankings for your business are simple:

  • Add new keywords contained in rich informative content, on a regular basis

  • Correctly optimise your meta tags on all pages. (Meta tags are non-visible information read by search engine robots when crawling your site)

  • Submit your site to all the major directories - but only in the format these directories approve

  • Get indexed by the big 3 Search Engines - again, by knowing how they like to find you

  • Get a regular supply of incoming links from related sites, but not too many at once

  • Submit articles to the important article directories, but only the right ones…

  • Ensure your site covers the keywords and phrases that your potential customer is going to search for. Focus on the lesser keywords and phrases that your competitors don't cover

  • Blow a fortune on pay per click advertising and buy your way to the top
That's a lot of time, research and effort for any business to invest.
